The Trans Bay Cable LLC utility operates dynamically within the broader Bay Area energy sector as a federally identified critical asset in the northern California electrical grid. The company owns and operates a 53-mile, high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) submarine transmission cable buried beneath the San Francisco Bay. Extending from converter substations in Pittsburg to San Francisco's Potrero district, this specialized underwater system transmits up to 400 megawatts of capacity, safely delivering approximately 40% of the daily electrical power used throughout the city and surrounding areas.
